The Wayland-Cohocton Athletic Department celebrated the 2023-2024 accomplishments of its student-athletes with an awards ceremony on Monday, June 10th.
“I wanted to begin our ceremony with a state of the union, of sorts. Some statistics and facts about our athletic programs will shed light on how fortunate we are here at Wayland-Cohocton,” said Mr. Toland, Coordinator of Athletics, Fitness and Aquatic, during his opening remarks. During the past school year, students in grades seven through twelve were provided 51 opportunities to join a modified, junior varsity or varsity team. This includes 18 fall teams, 19 winter teams, and 14 spring teams. Leading these teams and ensuring a positive experience were 64 appointed coaches. During the 2023-24 school year, 349 students participated on at least one modified, JV, or varsity team. The district’s representation within the Livingston Conference Athletic Association is worthy of high praise for Eagle teams, coaches, and athletes.
Wayland-Cohocton Eagles were recognized in the following capacities at the varsity level: 28 LCAA All Stars, 10 LCAA Exceptional Seniors, 12 Section V Champions, and 8 New York State Representatives competing at the State Cross Country Championships. Also worth noting, three Wayland-Cohocton coaches, Michelle Curtin, Brooke Wagner, and Steve Wager were recognized as Coaches of the Year in cross country, cheerleading and baseball, respectively. Coach Curtin and Coach Wager were awarded this title by the LCAA and Coach Wagner by the Batavia Daily News.
In addition to the awards recognized on stage, student athletes received a number of accolades as they arrived and were asked to stand highlighting those accomplishments during the evening’s festivities.
