The annual DWI Awareness Day for the Senior Class was held on Thursday, June 1. Students observed a DWI reenactment off-campus, then returned to school for a picnic and yard games. In the afternoon, a number of public and emergency agencies provided interactive and simulation-style learning opportunities to help students understand the effects of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The day ended in the LGI with a presentation given by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department and NYS Troopers concerning laws relating to drugs and alcohol. Kim Clark, of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, spoke about the loss of her daughter in a fatal motor vehicle accident; helping students realize how important it is they make safe decisions so they aren’t lost to their loved ones. WC’s Michelle Curtin, who organizes the event each year, spoke about the loss of her own mother to a drunk driver during her senior year of high school.
Thank you to all of the community groups, emergency personnel, health organizations, and law personnel that attended the event and brought an incredible wealth of knowledge and learning tools. It was apparent that everyone working with the kids truly wanted to see them safe and making healthy choices.
If you haven’t already, talk with your senior student about the event and use it as a catalyst to review your expectations for their behavior during graduation season and this summer. “It takes a village to keep our kids safe,” said Michelle Curtin.
