1966-1967 Undefeated Men's Wayland Basketball Team celebrates 50th Anniversary

The 1966-1967 Wayland Central Men’s Basketball team was recognized during the home game against Bath on Friday night and celebrated the 50th anniversary of its undefeated season.  The team is known to be the only with an undefeated regular season in the school’s history. The team suffered a loss in the first round of its sectional competition and did not advance, but still holds the record for the regular season.

Members of the team and Coach Allan Benning gathered for a dinner in the high school cafeteria catered by Steve’s restaurant and catering. The event was hosted by Coach Benning’s son and included a reception with the team members and guests, dinner and cake. The team was then escorted to the field house where members and Coach Benning were introduced by Dr. Tim Benning to the Friday night crowd between the varsity and junior varsity games. Community members and friends were then invited back to the cafeteria to reminisce with the team members.

Team members in attendance included Jim Williams, Bob McAllister, Daryl Williams, Don Walker, Gary Wolfanger, Jim Schubmehl,  Carl Hoppough, Team Manager Leo Didas and Coach Al Benning; those unable to make the reunion were: Tom Dean, Dave Szymanski and Tom Baldwin.
